HOLIDAY
I love classic movies and am a frequent subscriber to TCM. One of my favorites is the 1938 film adaptation of Philip Barry's "Holiday," starring Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn, considered two of the greatest, most iconic actors in Hollywood history; so I was eagerly anticipating Goodman Theater's adaptation of Richard Greenberg's play "Holiday," directed by Robert Falls, and it was absolutely worth the wait. The play revolves around Johnny Case, a determined self-made lawyer who, at his friends' urging, takes a much-needed getaway to escape the pressures of his demanding job. During his journey, he meets Julia, and instantly forms a connection, falling deeply in love, engaged, and planning their wedding. However, Johnny is unaware that Julia is part of one of New York's wealthiest and most traditional banking dynasties, the Seton family. He also discovers that Julia hasn't informed her father, Edward Seton, about their plans. Edward is a man of rigid principles, deeply invested in the traditions of the upper class, and his daughter Julia is his spitting image. Johnny has recently gained financial wealth and envisions a life of "retire young and work old," spending his younger years on self-discovery. He shares his dreams with Linda, the radical outcast sister of Julia, who admires his ideals. However, when Linda discovers that Johnny's goals are ultimately meaningless, she and her father are horrified by Johnny's plan. She insists that he work for a year, hoping to persuade him to adopt her perspective and think more critically about his aspirations.
"Holiday" is a spectacular production that is captivating, witty, exhilarating, and a testament to the greatness of theatrical performances. Each scene unfolds like a masterclass in what remarkable performances are meant to be. The chemistry among the cast is electrifying, creating a dynamic stage presence that draws the audience in. Luigi Sottile shines as the charismatic and charming Johnny Case, while Molly Griggs is positively amazing as Julia, the ideal Seton child to her father Edward. Bryce Gangel's portrayal of Linda Seton is both exhilarating and enthralling, perfectly capturing her sense of suffocation under her father's rigid rules, and Jordan Lage's performance as Edward Seton, a man who values tradition, prestige, and financial security and intelligence above all, was impressively true to life. The standout performance of the evening belongs to Wesley Taylor as Ned Seton, the younger brother and heir to Edward, who struggles with the pressure of family expectations and addiction. Taylor is truly incredible, blending humor and vulnerability perfectly. Christiana Clark and Jessie Fisher deliver outstanding performances as Nikka Washburn and Susan Feld, each bringing their own unique flair to the role. The ensemble is further enriched by the amazing performances of Erik Hellman, Alejandra Escalante, and Rammel Chan, all of whom contribute to this unforgettable theatrical experience, making Holiday an absolute Must-See!
The stage setting was extraordinary, exuding an inspiring ambience of elegance and style, and the meticulously choreographed setting changes unfolded with unparalleled precision. While the story begins with Johnny engaged to Julia, the play concludes with their engagement being called off once it becomes clear that Johnny will not sacrifice his dream of a Holiday, seen as a philosophical rebellion against society's current work structure to enjoy life while he is young. Ultimately, he discovers a profound connection with Linda, a kindred spirit whose philosophy of savoring life's pleasures aligns seamlessly with his own. Their shared passion for joy and a zest for living not only brings them together but sparks a powerful bond that promises adventure and fulfillment. "Holiday is a wonderfully crafted play that captivates from start to finish, leaving you craving more as the final curtain falls."
