The Phantom of the Opera

The Phantom of the Opera is back, and it's time to enjoy the music of the night. Cadillac Palace Theatre proudly presents an enchanting new North American tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber's timeless masterpiece, The Phantom of the Opera. The production draws inspiration from the West End in London, reopening in 2021, and features stunning visual effects, elaborate set designs, breathtaking vocal performances, and captivating costumes that enhance an unforgettable experience. The Phantom of the Opera is a romantic tragedy in which a disfigured man, known only as The Phantom, haunts the Opera Populaire. He becomes obsessed with a beautiful and talented young soprano, Christine Daaé, whom he secretly mentors as her "Angel of Music."  The Phantom of the Opera is one of my favorite plays, and the cast features outstanding performances by Isaiah Bailey as the Phantom and Jordan Lee Gilbert as Christine Daaé. A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music with a degree in classical vocal performance, Gilbert, the New York City-based soprano, brings to the stage that old-Hollywood presence and voice that are perfect for the role of Christine Daaé, the Phantom's muse. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, he began singing in church at age three, performing at age 10 at the Wildwood Opera Camp, and began formal classical training at the Chotard Institute of Music at age 14. Isaiah Bailey captured our hearts as the Phantom. When it comes to exceptional vocal prowess, Midori Marsh stands out as one of the most captivating opera singers, while Christopher Bozeka shines as an extraordinary tenor. Rounding out the outstanding cast of 39 members are Daniel Lopez, William Thomas Evans, Carrington Vilmont, and Lisa Vroman.

The performance features key songs like "The Music of the Night," "All I Ask of You," "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again," and "Masquerade." This 2-hour, 35-minute play, including an intermission, will stir your soul and awaken your theatrical spirit. It is a play that inspires the dreams of those considering an acting career, invigorates the spirit, and ignites your passion for theater. This production brought back the original, elegant, and stunning staging set elements, featuring a beautiful chandelier that dangled over the audience and fell on them during the performance. I have the pleasure of sitting in the rows of seats where the chandelier descended. It was an exhilarating experience.

The Phantom of the Opera is one of my favorite plays, and this production, with its phenomenal singing and music, doesn't miss a beat; however, the theater still has some room for improvement regarding its sound system. There were several moments when the clarity of the vocals faltered, requiring listeners to strain to catch the lyrics, particularly during the ensemble pieces, where multiple singers delivered different lines simultaneously, creating a delightful yet challenging listening experience. As someone who once sought admission to the Juilliard School of Music for its opera training program and a devoted lover of music, enhancing audio clarity is the final touch the theater needs to elevate the overall sound to match the brilliance of the performances. The Phantom of the Opera is seen as an overwhelmingly positive production, with a cult-like following. Still, some see it as a manipulative man, with controlling desires over a fragile woman, in his need to obsess over her. But in the climax, Andrew Lloyd Webber brings out the passionate humanity of the Phantom, who decides that a choice of love is more important than its demand. The play continues to provide audiences with an exhilarating, suspenseful must-see experience.
