That's What Friends Are For: Gladys, Dionne, and Patti
Daryl Brooks has done it again, brilliantly weaving an enthralling narrative reminiscent of his remarkable work "Time Machine" with his latest creation, "That's What Friends Are For: Gladys, Dionne, and Patti." Written and directed by Brooks, this captivating play spotlights three legendary musical icons—Patti LaBelle, Dionne Warwick, and Gladys Knight—who unite in Las Vegas for an unforgettable performance. As they talk backstage, their memories of their 50-year historical friendship begin to unfold, inviting the audience to listen in as they reflect on their sisterly bond, individual journeys, the complex relationships with the men in their lives, and the highs and lows of friendship, and family, that have shaped their careers and lives over the decades.
One by one, Dionne, Gladys, and Patti share their remarkable journeys, historical triumphs, and poignant tragedies through a tapestry of memorable songs, delighting every listener. Brooks showcases an impressive array of talent with the remarkable Rose Marie Simmons (Mature Gladys), the captivating Sybyl Walker (Mature Dionne), and the dazzling Tamara Batiest as Mature Patti. Walker does remind you of Dionne and, on some songs, sounds like her, too. But it's the singing of two extraordinary ladies, Simmons and Batiest, who create mesmerizing performances all on their own. Their voices are a pure delight, capable of captivating the audience for hours. Battiest, in particular, who remarkably embodies Patti LaBelle's characteristics, movement, and voice, delivers a sensational and breathtaking performance with "You Are My Friend" at the close of the first act, leaving everyone in awe. Her vocal prowess is simply unforgettable!

The cast, featuring Bri Buckley, Michaela Dukes, and Courtney Driver (another fantastic singer), who play the young Dionne, Gladys, and Patti, also includes Michael J. Santos. Ensemble members Dwight Neal, Jaitee Thomas, Dennis Dent, and Trequon Tate join them, completing a memorable night of entertainment. Founded in 1976 by the phenomenal producer, playwright, and actress Jackie Taylor, the Black Ensemble Theater, who recently wrote a touching tribute to her brother, in “Elvis is a Black Man Named Joe,” presents this captivating two-act play featuring 23 incredible songs and running for a full 2 hours, including an intermission—that more than delivers and ensures you get every bit of your money's worth. Don't miss out on this extraordinary show! Brooks's "That's What Friends Are For: Gladys, Dionne and Patti," is a must-see event in Chicago. It's sure to have you singing throughout the entire show.
