Circus Abyssinia: Ethiopian Dreams features dazzling acrobatics, impressive juggling performances, and gravity-defying stunts, infused with the vibrant rhythms of Ethiopian music. The story is about two brothers, Mehari "Bibi" Tesfamariam and Binyam "Bichu" Shimellis. It follows Little Bibi and Little Bichu as they dream of joining the circus. With dreams of joining the circus and no circus tradition in Ethiopia, they are following their dreams, making them come true, and creating a high-flying, bona fide Ethiopian circus with feats of acrobatic skill! The 70-minute performance is a condensed version of what you might typically expect from a traveling circus, infused with a unique, hybrid flair. Nor is it comparable to what you would see from the Jessie White Tumblers, a team of acrobats founded in 1959 by Illinois athlete and politician Jesse White. It's more like a beginner's circus soleil. Still, it is bursting with energy, offering an experience filled with delightful amazement that will captivate both children and adults alike; a joyful celebration for everyone in attendance.
Co-creators and brothers, Bibi and Bichu, delivered an extraordinary juggling performance that captivated the audience. They began their juggling journey as teenagers, honing their skills on the vibrant streets of Jimma, Ethiopia. Through unwavering persistence and countless hours of practice, they not only perfected their craft but also developed a unique bond with one another. This harmonious blend of juggling, music, and choreography created a fascinating presentation of acrobatic skills, allowing the brothers to communicate specifically. This particular show, featuring an all-male cast in Chicago, is missing some members of their ensemble, leaving the stage feeling incomplete and the energy somewhat subdued.
The show requires some enhancements to ensure its ongoing success as it journeys across the country; fortunately, this is an area where the brothers excel, showcasing their talent and dedication to improvement.
